Hi everyone. My wife and I just got some vaccinations today for Hepatitis A and typhoid. We probably are just erring on the side of caution...

The nurse who administered the shots, though, told us that malaria is a real danger in Nicaragua and that we should take chloroquine tablets every week we are there.

Do any of you do this? Have you had malaria? Is it very common? We will be living in a small town, probably either Jinotepe or something similar in size...

Malaria is possible.

I've never taken anything to prevent malaria, nor has any of my family, and I don't think any of my in-laws who live there do either.

I have a friend from Nigeria (no he's not the one sending you all the emails) who got malaria in Nigeria, so I know it can happen. He was laid up in bed for weeks before he was allowed to return to the US.

Small possibility of malaria in Nica, bigger threat is dengue & there is nothing you can take to prevent it. Use plenty of insect repellent & you should be ok.

Okay, that's what I figured. By the way, Africa has REALLY bad malaria, like 4 different types, so it's not very surprising that your friend got it in Nigeria.

Anyway, I expect that if we need to, we can get chloroquine tablets there, right? I'm sure they'd be a lot cheaper than the $10 per pill here in the States??

A few years back I was doing some research & the best I could tell was that the strains of malaria here are not too bad & that it was easier to treat it than the side effects trying to prevent it.

With the rainy season there are plenty of skeeters out & about. Just bring plenty of repellent.

I think that is the trick..Keep ém suckers off of you, use an airconditioned room or a mosquito netting in the nights, and fix it so you dont lay up beside of it in the night, those blood suckers can go thru the netting with their needle if you are up against it...

Been here almost 17 years and never had malirea, but Dengue one time, thankfully NOT the hemoragic kind...

And the medicine? tried it when I first came, but threw it down...

Don't bother with chloroquine unless you test positive. Nica malaria is pretty mild and relatively (compared to most tropical regions) rare. The side effects of chloroquine don't justify its use for prevention.

Be sure to get some deltamethrin netting for the beds, though. It'll prevent the bugs from getting to you and the kids while you sleep. Malaria really isn't the worst thing to worry about. Also, if you are bringing dogs, get a good deltamethrin collar. The leishmanniasis (mountain leprosy) out east is becoming world famous (RSJ is popping up in all the dermatology journals).

Malaria--in most of tropical America the Vivax strain of malaria is the most prevalent. There are 4 types (falciparum, vivax, malariae, and ovale) This will make definitely make you sick but probably won't kill you. I had it while working in Leticia, Colombia back in mid 70's.

The falciparum strain can kill you... and it almost did that to me in Indonesia. I spent two weeks near dying and six weeks total in private hospital in Denpasar before being let out for another month of low activity and bed rest at a Balinese private home.

The 1st two weeks were awful. The malaria had a built in timer and it seems to be that way in most people.Burning fever and ice cold chills were pretty constant but I always knew that at 3'o clock in the morning on the dot it would get it's worst. The shaking and shivering from the icy coldness that enveloped me would curl me up into a tight fetal position ....and, then, in the next instant I would burning from the intense white hot heat of the fever. This created the most profound hallucinatory state I have ever experienced and -yep, I have done my fair share of hallucinogens in my younger days. These hallucinations were incredibly real and very, very dark. Nuclear war, Guys blowing my death dirge on flutes outside my window, becoming a beast in the hunt. Pretty eerie stuff. I'm not sure what the Doctor was giving me giving me in terms of meds so that could also have been some med side effects. They were worried about me and I was definitely worried about me too when I had my wits about me enough. I was even praying to the local Balinese God Siwang Wedi to spare my life.

Currently most people when they visit the local travel clinic will get Malarone or Dioxyclin. You should be aware that in using these that they are not a cure or an absolute preventive against getting malaria. There efficacy rate, or how much they will protect you is about 60/70%. The cloroquinine-based family of drugs is not used as much anymore.

The drug now recommended by the WHO and the CDC out of Atlanta is now based on Artemisinin, and its more powerful distillate artesunate, both of which are an extracts of the Sweet Wormwood plant. (Artemis annua.)
This family of drugs has no known side effects and has been in treating all four types of malaria. The efficacy rate is as high as 97%.

I often use wormwood, black walnut and clove as an anti-parasite treatment/purge. Interesting to hear about wormwood's anti malarial properties as well.

What a great description. There should be a section in every medical book like that before they go into the microbilogy of it all. I've never heard malaria described that way before.

Almost makes me want to try it. :D

You can get more than thirty tablets for $10. For that matter it's cheap & available without prescription everywhere south of the Rio Grande. I took it regularly as a preventative for a while - no side effects, except a beneficial one. I found the phosphate salt better, less bitter than the sulfate of chloroquine. Clever of the Brits to make a tonic of quinine to swallow with their gin, while wondering what in the hell were they doing in the tropics, besides speaking English.

I continue to use it on occasion of getting the runs (rarely). It works wonders. Apparently it's an amoebaecide.

Wow. I take Choloroquine, 2 X 250 mg a week. Since it is a 7 week overall program and I am here usually more frequently than that I just never stop.

A 250 mg tablet in Toronto costs 8 cents. So 16 cents a week. The pharmacy fee is often more than the drug cost, e.g 60 pills is a 30 week supply for $4.80 and then the pharmacy charges $12, so close to triple the drug cost. $10 a pill is criminal if that is the case.

I used to have to take those chlooquine pills for malaria when I was in the military and traveled to anywhere tropic. They made my stomach feel horrible, and they said I could not give blood for up to 4 years after my last pill. I suppose that did not matter considering I got Anthrax shots, probably shouldn't give blood for life after that.

When I was in the Navy we were taking pink pills for a few weeks before we went to Kenya. I do not remember any side effects or any advice about them. They just ordered us to take them. I wonder if that was what we were taking. Kenya was the only reason they gave us for taking those pills. I went all over Southeast Asia, Kenya and Australia on that deployment.

I think they were large pink pills, but I can't recall clearly. Some people had reactions and others not. The reaction may have been caused by some drinking, mixed with the pills though.

Man you have missed a lot since you left. There are many states now that allow Medicinal MJ. Anyone with any kind of illness can get a prescription in many states.

I followed a thread by a fellow in Northern California that was a MJ Card Holder and I think the number was 20 plants that one can grow. He had machinery dig huge trenches in his property and he filled them with select top soil mixes and then planted high powered high yielding clones that made huge bushes that were 7 feet tall and 6 feet wide. This fellow legally grew more MJ that season that your average stoner would smoke in a lifetime. And I do not even think the fellow was even that sick!

I could provide a link that shows the pictures of his operation but I cannot go to that site right now, as I am at work:eek:

One of the fellows showed me a way to get around the firewall, but I don't need to access anything against company policy at work. Things can happen, especially if you have an ex-wife problem or something.
