Homesteading has proved to be challenging lately and it was definitely time for a break from the routine. Roger and I decided to make the Gringo Market in San Juan del Sur this weekend, with goodies like corn bread, pickled hot peppers and chimichurri sauce in tow, and get away from hauling cane for a few days.
We're country folks, quite used to being up and going at the break of day, and we arrived at this beach town by 9am to find not a single seller in sight. Dan showed up wearing his awesome camera, hoping for some shots of the tsunami that might be coming our way. This was the first I had heard of it and I was worried for maybe half a second about it affecting the day's market sales. Hey, it's Nicaragua, just deal with whatever comes your way, I say! A Red Cross ambulance parked by the beach and made announcements about the warning status of the tsunami, and it was nice to know that someone down here was keeping an eye on things.
The foot traffic at the market was sparse and sales were not what I had hoped, but I did make a few new acquaintances and was able to introduce some new products from our company into this area of Nicaragua. I got some great goodies from GR's garden, starts of basils (lemon and Thai) and some beautiful chives, and visiting with friends I don't get to see often enough always makes the trip worthwhile!
About 11 or so, loud bikes began coming in to town. Rumbling and grumbling, they prowled slowly down the streets, drawing stares and making heads turn. The Harleys had come to town! As we left San Juan del Sur and headed North on the PanAm Hwy, we must have passed 75 more bikers on their way to that sleepy, little, fishing village. It won't be very sleepy tonight!
Any folks in SJDS wanna let us know how the biker evening went...quizás??????
