At the Colegio Anglicana of Puerto Cabezas, 19 students came down with a case of Grisi Signis, which in the article is described as Mass Histeria.

The illness can only affect natives and is supposedly black magic. One of the symptoms is described as the person affected will run around with their eyes shut. Another is convulsions and shock.

From the article it sound like most of the harm that the people affected suffer is caused by their dilerium, as they may walk straight into the water and drown.

Supposedly this 'illness' is contagious, if a person affected mentions your name and you are native the disease will spread to you.

The Department of Health had to hire a Faith Healer to try and solve this problem.

The school is worried because many parents have taken their children from classes.

A little, but I am told it is a heriditary thing from the tribe being canibals many generations ago.

It is called crazy sickness, some can even become violent

Its funny when The Spanish Reporters report on things from the Atlantic coast, because they mix the english words up a bit and just spell it as it sounds rather than what it is.

Cra - zy - Sick - ness
Gri - si - Sig - nis

might be better as enfermedad loca

They in general will make a ¨Remark about Spainyards¨ they generaly do not like them..

I am working on Miskito/English words, here are a few that my wife thinks are Miskito and not English

Knife, fork, spoon, step, wan(want), Beep Wina (Beef meat), Stinky no hell, brudder, F*ck lick (beat the hell out of somebody),

So now there is about 40 cases of Grisi Signis.

The parents have complained that the Teachers did not assist the girls when this happened to them. The Students had to carry them to the hospitals.

Some say that they are acting out this sickness so they do not have to take a test.

"Grisi Signis" is a serious thing. Once while I was visiting Port it came upon me, I broke my new camera, fell to the ground, & stumbled around aimlessly. Don't think this is some kind of mental foolishness, Grisi will get you. Another good reason to avoid "The Dangerous Atlantic Coast". Of course I kinda enjoyed it, so I have been back since the last outbreak, but I must have built an immunity to it, last trip I was "nearly" Grisi free.

Come to think of it I did have some chicken that day, maybe the reason I was not affected during my last trip was that I had no chicken. Damn interesting.

I think I got that Signis once at a fritanga in Jinotepe, I ate the under cooked fried chicken. Only thing was my eyes didn't shut and the world didn't start spinning, all that happened was I felt the urge to sit on a toilet for 2 weeks. I do not recall much of that 2 weeks because it was so tramatic.
