Thread: Old BS Trumps the New BS

Default Old BS Trumps the New BS

Health pass, insurance, two covid tests, what else could they want ?

The old standby, proof of some way out of CR.
I knew that, simply forgot, focused on the new BS.

Usually the airline would ask for it,, didn't. and Shelley couldn't get through CR immigration until she found a bus ticket to purchase online.

Back in the day,, you used to have to purchase a full fare ticket and then cancel it (immediately,, the Ticos didn't check). There were no bus tickets to be had online.

I finally kept a $25 bus ticket paper clipped in my passport, had one hassle with a US airline, but they relented. They are only good for a year.

They also made her buy an extra day's insurance, don't know that full story yet.
She said that the plane was half full.

She still has to bus to the border from Liberia in the morning, pay her exit tax ($7, but the machine in migration never works so you buy the chit for $8 from some entrepreneurial guy), and walk across no man's land to NicaVille.

Funny that there are no pedicabs there, like everywhere else.

The Tico aduana pawed through all of her stuff, but didn't charge her anything.

I have seen dozens of reports of people having problems with less than 5 days insurance on entry in CR if transiting to Nica. Seen lots of people use 3 days with no problem exiting Nica and then leaving CR. In SJO sounds like they have a desk handy to sell you an additional 2 days coverage of the CR gov insurance. Everybody hurting and Gringos that can afford to travel and bring in their germs should be happy to pay a little Gringo Tax, seems to be the theme.

Eastern has charter dates into September now, so don't expect a return of "normal" flights in the foreseeable future.

Saw an interesting article other day, no idea if true but made more sense than anything else I have seen. The Nica government regulations require the crew and plane be registered well in advance, something a normal airline cannot do, Avianca and Eastern are doing it and charging a big premium but that allows them to dedicate aircraft and crew for the flight. Wish I had copied the article as cannot find it again, was in depth and had lot of good points, but the above is the gist of it.

SJO now has covid tests at airport. Don't known what the turn around is for PCRF for Nic. United website now has complete circle jerk to cancel flights and no human operators. Covis has become the universal excuse for bad customer service.

I looked at the spike yesterday in CR. It is a hum-dinger that keeps on climbing. Will it peak or plateau? Are they looking at another 2-3 weeks or 2-3 months? Tico Pres says he is holding tight with relatively light shutdowns to not trash the economy. 18% unemployment is enough.

Also, if you are going to smell the roses, tico 5 day insurance is 4 days in English-Speak so it is less than you think. I'm gunna do trawick and buy an extra day or 2. Bought a ticabus tickee online once out of fear of migracion. Couldn't figure out how to so an "abierto" date so got a fixed date and viewed it as a throwaway. Adios, my $29...
Shudda bought an rt this time but they have you between a rock and a hard place--if return date is too soon airline of migracion may not accept it, if it is too late and your visa is for the number of days of insurance migracion may not accept it.

American carriers are surviving on the government bailout, surprise, surprise, when that either goes away or is reduced the current shitty experience will be glorious in comparison.

Went to the movies with the wifa last night, first time in probably 18 months or more. There were 6 paying people in the whole theater, concessions were 3/4 closed. You can't get extra popcorn salt anymore, they quit offering it, but they will give you the paper tiny baggies of regular salt. That gave me the unadulterated red-ass.

. That might be the understatement of the year. And just wait until governmental and US public school interaction is back to supposed "normal". We ain't seen nothing yet.

    2020 was worse.

    It can only get better.
Logically, at some point the traveler's vaccination status will come into play, if only as an inventive to get some fence sitters vaccinated.

This is going to go away in the US, i dont know about the rest of the world

I expect some of these carriers are going to get hit with big class action lawsuits. Selling tickets for flight they had no intention of flying then making you piss up a rope to try and get a refund, credits or re bookings (for more non existent flights) were easy. Spirit and American were & still are (although less occasionally) selling tix for MGA flights they know they will never make.

As far as reaching a human, good luck, use Whatsapp or messenger seems to be best.

Think is WestJet in a bind, they spent all the $$, need a Gov loan to repay all the refunds they owe.

IT would explain a heck of a lot - IIUC US flight crews are scheduled the day of, if not hours before, the flight. There was a retired AA pilot who wrote a pretty concise summary in Feb on the Nica Air travel group. He also went on to mention that there was not the software hooks to handle the certificates. That has probably changed now with US regs (along with many other countries) where the 72 hour rule now applies although the twist seems to be that our regs are 72 hours prior to boarding while Nica regs are 72 hours at arrival.

If you have to register the plane days in advance, anything can happen. With Spirit no big deal if they cancel,as their Contract of Carriage allows them out of almost anything if flight is cancelled, on AA you would have some leverage, they pay your hotel, get you on next flight, etc. Huge costs risk for airlines.

CDC is not a credible source of information. Telling peepul with vacs to back off of masks in crowded places is a mistake. At best shots are 80-90% effective for variants known at time of vaccine tests. As time and mega spikes like CR the chance of new variants is high. Will each manufacturer have to come up with its own new booster?

With a lot of luck, pandemic may be down to a low roar in US, lets say 100 dead a day, by the end of year, with foreign outbreaks all over the place and trying to find their way here. Lotta hype about India. Yes, 4k dead a day is sad, but put it in deaths' per 100k India is much better off than US. Unless they spin it out of control, which is what CR seems to be doing.

Had my Jensen with no side effects. Net net, I consider myself 50% immune when you figure relative weakness or vaccine and chance of new variants. Elderly relative had her second maderna with a huge bump but no pain or anything else. Wife says long line in hot sun to get vacs in Esteli, they never heard of appointments I guess. she will try again next week.

Some where I guess there is a cost-per-minute or cost -per-day for airline delays but I have not run into it. It has got to be huge. One time some jackass on outgoing flight from MGA refused to put on his seatbelt. It took an hour to pussyfoot and then have a nice man in a business suit escort him off the plane. I sure hope he was an honored guest of NP for a day or 2.

Avianca is under bankruptcy court order to fly or else. and no doubt Colombia is not about to come up with "Too big to fail".
Another side effect of covid is when it is all overish, many businesses will be carrying a load of debt. Their death certs may say "bankruptcy, underlying cause covid 19".

I know I have been horribly wrong thinking that technology can trump human failings/stupidity/willful ignorance and thought how we would have just 12 or so month not the two years of the 1918/1919 example...

Early 2022 before anything can be considered close to normal in the ROTW and fall of 2021 for the first world.

From where I watch the 3rd world meet the 2.25 world for the most part with a little of the 1st world thrown in for good measure, lots of people are back to normal for the most part. See humans adapt, for worse or for better, and the adaption left what we considered normal behind and what is coming up will normal before we know it. People are too busy, have too many outlets for communication/entertainment(smart phone/internet), and have a front row seat to the train wreck happening so people are not in total angst and turmoil, yet. I doubt they ever get there actually. Few are going hungry in the 1st world and the developed 3rd world. That is the tale of the tape, let some hunger set in and it will be off to the races.

Every time I watch the news and video of the immigrants wading out of a river, I notice that the immigrants all appear to be well clothed well fed (if not fat) with certainly no skinny emaciated, hungry individuals......ever!

Am starting to believe that the third world countries involved are financing their populace to emigrate to the US, get their free stuff and jobs so they can send dollars back home.

And the Dems are falling for it if not promoting it.

We are being destroyed from within and without.

For a short moment Agriculture surpassed remittances as biggest portion of Nicaragua's economy, 2018 screwed that up. 3rd World depends on Western Union (not so much WU now days as many better options) but you get the picture.

Absolutely correct. Sending money back to Mexico is their second largest industry in terms of revenue, just slightly behind oil. It is way, way up there for the CentAm countries, as mentioned it is huge for Nicaragua, and that is just what they can track. There is a metric shit ton of cash that gets carried back to Nica or shipped to Nicaragua.

Oh the Reporklicans are hip deep into the fiasco as well. Bless Trumps heart, he was the only politician since about Eisenhower that went hard against the wets. Nixon did to a degree as well, but it was not front and center. Saint Ronnie gave them amnesty.

The thing you have to consider is that the trafficking of wets is likely now bigger money in terms of ROI for the crime groups; no shitass Colombians to pay, no dealing with having the DEA hounding you, every cop from every branch on your ass. I mean this deal going on right now is just absolutely incredible, the crime groups are charging more money now for helping people turn themselves in than they were 2 or 3 years ago for having to get people past the river/border, then the checkpoints, and run them up the US. Now the wets pay more to be turned it. The traffickers costs have probably gone down 30%, and their price has increased about 40%.

Trump had Mexico stepping and fetching with the threats of duties, that was the bad motor scooter, that shook their ass to the core and AMLO was terrified. The Mexicans, on their side of the border, did more to affect the reduction of illegal immigration than all the US efforts combined and it didn't cost the US taxpayer a dime. But alas, here were are. My daughter takes batting lessons from a big BP supervisor, those guys have given up and are just going through the motions, in this one sector they are releasing about between 1,000 to 1,500 wets a day with sometimes a court date, a bus ticket and a ride, some meals, and an attaboy/attagirl. Some get sent back, but a bunch are being let in. In our area it is a temporary PIA, cops and LEO everywhere. But it will be temporary as they don't stay here, they go to the rest of the US.

I never imagined it would last so long and now think still long ways to go and then there is what's next, a new round of new variants or a entirely new virus. Sounds like boosters for the vaccine are a certainty, think Moderna already has their's ready.

Guess the DAC is a hot zone right now, was expected with the Semana Santa influx, everyone was worried about it but everyone needed the money the people bring in. Bluff has been hit hard, Island not as bad it seems but hard to tell, anyone infected instantly drops off radar, stays home, no way going to hospital except as a last resort, not so sure about Bluefields but assume is same as anyone going to Bluff and most going to Islands passed through, then all the visitors went back to wherever they are from carrying it home with them.

The world runs on money laundering and ponzi schemes. Look at the Federal debt and deficit, there's simply no money for all this, and never will be. People are living off of money borrowed from someone who borrowed it from someone who lent the same money to ten different people.

And hackers. The attack that shutdown Colonial Pipeline ‘earned’ the hacker ring Darkside $5 million. Colonial said it was not going to pay ransom, but based on evidence in an online ledger that tracks cryptocurrency payments, analyses say Colonial made the payment. Of course, unstoppable crypto makes it profitable with low risk… Darkside collected $14 million in ransoms for all of 2020 and raked in $46 million in just the first three months of this year, according to Chainalysis.

Another criminal group, known as Babuk, hacked the Washington D.C. police department. When negotiations failed, they dumped online a trove of their documents including raw intelligence of the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol.

Along with big ransom money from corps & other institutions, national security (shutting down gas deliveries, electrical grid, or water supply, &c.) and the ability of the military to conduct warfare/defence are threatened by state & private hackers. Other than ‘remittances’ from uncle Xi, it’s practically North Korea only source of income. Those who hacked

The necessary push is to improve cybersecurity. But it’s grossly underfunded. Corps don’t realize until it’s too late how vulnerable they are. AI will play a key role. And big tech is fucking up the works. They - esp, FB - didn’t just bring down a US gov’t that was actively checking & blocking China’s intrusions. Google refused to work with DoD on AI, but is, in fact, doing so with China (stupidly thinking it’s not for military applications). Apple refused to give its cell phone encryption to the FBI during the San Bernardino husband/wife terrorist attack, but China, where their cell phones are made with slave labor, knows.

Maybe the hackers are just laundering money too. The image I get from reading about these Darkside and Babuk people makes me think of Bond Villains. Dr. No in his underwater lair, hacking the world of crypto so he can install a new torture device. Fleming worked in British Intelligence, he probably knew such people existed. Or at least knew that letting the public think they existed took the heat and attention off the real villains, our own government and those who own it.

"Fully vaccinated people can resume activities without wearing a mask or physically distancing, except where required by federal, state, local, tribal or territorial laws, rules and regulations, including business and workplace guidance," the CDC states on its website.

except public transit, healthcare, yadda yadda yadda.

Another slight of hand CDC is using is counting partially vaccinated people as proof that everybody is on board with vaccination even though they know that the first shot of the 2-shot vaccines does little.

One of Trump's greatest failures is not dumping Fauci on day One. He is an unelected politician, not a doctor.

"Support mental health or I'll break your head"

Covid was an intelligence test and we flunked.
