You don't ask for much. Are you going to be running CAD programs or something? That is what I have on my desktop now.

TigerDirect seems to offer the most consistent (Day to day) deals..

Tiger / business / XP Laptops

All major manufacturers have their Laptops built configured and even drop shipped from one of 2 contract manufactures.. Quanta (Dell / HP) and Flextronix (Acer who recently changed from Quanta) .. I think Levono (Old IBM) still builds their own..

If you get Vista premium / Enterprize you can "Downgrade" install XP (and 64 bit IIRC as well) at first power up.. I have only heard this 3rd hand.

Watch the Leveno / Dell and HP sites regularly and search for online coupons that could reduce the cost dramaticly at check out time..

At work they gave me one of these Compaq / HP which is close to the specs you mention and gives good performance. Especially with math intensive processes (FFTs in my case)

Of course these are US sites.. If you are looking for Nica specific purchase you could use these numbers to help with the bargain..

Randude, everyday I work with 3d apps model and render in AutoCad 2010/3dsmax2010, postpro with Adobe PS,Il,Ae, and Premiere, sometimes I need to keep it all open to achieve realtime media editing. I have to deal with large files for rendering and short deadlines.
In an perfect world what I'd really need is a workstation like this MN-64E Dual Xeon® Quad Core., I can't afford it now, so I need to upgrade my laptop.
Thanks Bill, last night I'd been surfing the first link, sale factor in Nica goes around 1.25-1.5 problem is that maybe I don't have any choice, warranty issues.

I am an electrical engineer, I rarely even draft any more, but fellas I know are running Ship Constructor and Rendering 3D Autocad with single processors. They bitch a lot, but they can get it done. The complex shapes that they work with on a day to day basis are very tasking to a computer. There are very few right angles on a ship.

There are plenty curves in ship 3d models, that's memory eater in 3d renderings, I guess you need at least 3d basic models provided by ship designers,to fit all the electrical stuff into... do you use Autodesk plattform based software or BIM apps?
Btw,I found an article about CAD and laptops.

    Where there's a will there's a way..

Beasties like this are regulars at Geeks.com . If you have a states side contact to ship one and (it looks like you need) a nica based geek you can make something like this this meet your needs with a second processor and a good video card.. For under $800 bucks typically. Hardware is bullet proof (in most cases) these days and your real support is software related..

Computers are cheap today. Shipping is another problem.

I just don't draft any more. I don't even do that much detailed engineering. I am a manager now. I manage suppliers of of engineering and materials. My skills come in when some contractor tries to BS me and drive the cost up. I am really getting away from detailed engineering.

I am using the company "All American Cargo" that Jonh recommended, my shipment comes in today, and I will let you know how that goes. I asked via Email what the smallest package they would send is, but that part of my email was never answered.

If what you are shipping in is valued at under U$500 dollars including the shipping to Nicaragua, you don't have to mess with paying Nica taxes on it, supposedly.

I shipped in 251 pounds of stuff in 8 boxes (17" cubed), total cost was U$135 dollars.

70 lbs = $35.00 additional lbs are $ 0.60 per lb extra & a U$5 dollar fee for paperwork of some sort.

This is the webpage for Dell in Latin America http://www1.la.dell.com/content/defa...s&s=gen&~ck=cr

they ship out of Panama I believe, you might be better off with them for a few reasons, one your laptop keyboard and installed programs will be Spanish format and two because warranties and such might be easier to handle if there is an issue.

On that note I would suggest you ship it empty (as configured on page, just add a second Xeon from another place maybe) .. That will be sub $500

Geeks live (I am told) On twinkies, pizza and Pepsi.. I seen the last 2 there.. The first may be a challenge..

I had this conversation yesterday with 3F, what minimum computer would I need for ACAD 2010. I've always used off-the-shelf basic computers for ACAD with perfectly fine results. But I only use 2-D ACAD and I've rarely done any sort of rendering. I figure if I ever need that it'd be best to just hire it out since I don't even have those skills to begin with.

I'm using a Sony Vaio with those specs. It was around $900 at Fry's last January. May be cheaper by now.
